RGB to LAB conversion

In the past few months I recall reading a post here which had a technique to expand the colour range of an image by adjusting levels in RGB, then converting to LAB and then sorting the levels and taking it back to RGB - or something similar to this.

i recall trying it and finding that it worked really well and I thought I had bookmarked the post (as I have done with many useful posts) but I clearly didn't bookmark it

does anyone recognise what I am rambling on about and can you either point me at the original post or explain it again?

Thank you
