Alan, great summary – thanks for that! AND especially big thanks for the tip on Dfine, hadn't heard of that before but will definitely be trying that out on some of the shots from Hangzhou!

For a completely free but still effective solution G'MIC includes a Banding denoise filter (plus a huge collection of other useful tools).  There are several ways to access it but I just use the GIMP plug-in myself.
