Battery Strategy

I am now using a PowerShot G9 X, which includes the ability to charge the battery in the camera via USB. It also came with the standard Canon external battery charger, and I have a second battery already. I know modern Li-On batteries generally do not still have the dreaded memory issues common in older types. When I'm traveling I plan to charge one battery while using the other whenever possible. For daily use, when I might take a picture or two one day, a few next week, a few dozen on a special occasion, or whatever (never using a full battery), what is the best charging strategy and why?

  1. Connect the camera to a USB cable now and then, ignoring the spare battery.
  2. Charge a spare battery externally when the one in the camera starts to tick down or when I think I might need extra juice.
  3. Keep using the one int he camera until its dead then stick in the spare that has been sitting around since the last time I thought I might need it.
  4. Something else???
