If I were buying a new flash today (and didn't have any flashes already), it would take a lot of special requirements to convince me to get anything other than the Nissin i40.

(I do NOT have the Nissin i40. I have an older Nissin. Great flash. The i40 looks even better.)

As someone used to built-in flashes that pretty much manage themselves, I've found this thread quite interesting. TTL, even if not perfect, does seem like a nice option if you're not experienced enough to know how you should manually set your flash, but you still want to try and get a decent exposure in one try.

The MK320 has a lot of appeal in being ~$80, vs ~$260 for the i40. For those who really need a nice external flash, the difference may be easy to justify. But for people mainly looking for a little more power, it's a bigger jump.

Does anyone have thoughts on why the i40 is a better choice? I'm trying to learn, not trying to argue.

I didn't realize that they were holding the i40 price so high, so yes, I can see that being a bit of a blocker for someone looking to minimize their spend. I have the older DI466 which is about the same GN (33 vs 40 @ 53mm) but is larger, and about half the cost.

My E-M5ii came with a small Olympus flash that tilts and swivels (FL-LM3), so I was looking forward to learning about bouncing. But the power seems rather low. So it looks like I need to bump up my ISO beyond 200 to try bouncing if ~10-12 feet away, at f2.8. This just got me curious about other inexpensive options that can bounce.

The FL-LM3 has a GN of 9 (lower than some built in flashes). It would probably work fine for inside shots sitting across the table from someone, but any more than that it will be stretched to do its job well.
