I have the SX 60 and have tried both methods.

Full zoom. No crop

Full zoom + 1,6 digital Tc.

Full zoom cropped to look like it with digital zoom

I think Canon digital zoom works well and can be used. I do not think there is a big difference.The images are hand-held. I was standing with my back against a wall.

You hand held a 1.6x digi-zoom at 1/30 sec...  you are my hero!   Those are pretty good examples of the effectiveness of a 1.6x digi.
I wonder how much detail you would have got on a tripod with a 2 second timer on the shutter?
