Long zoom will be covered later with a used tele lens (e.g. 45-200).

What do you think?

Personally I would go for the G6, because it gives you the most bang for your buck. E-PL7 lacks viewfinder. Others, fine but more expensive. I think that the G7 is the only one to give you 4K burst shooting and 4K video, plus with next week's software update will give some kind of still focus-stacking using the 4K video burst while adjusting the focus and allowing you to extract an 8mp still where you want the focus to be.

You could probably find a cheap hardly-used Panasonic 14/42 kit lens on eBay for it if you really can't afford to buy it as part of the camera kit.

Whether you actually want or will use that sophistication is doubtful. It depends on his age and ability and experience. All these cameras can be used as point and shoot but all are as very sophisticated in their own way.
