ok .... i would like to mark this as answered ... no particular individual reply gave me the answer but each one has given me things to consider from a knowledgeable...

Only a person with the exactsame photog needs/ preferences as yourself could give you "the answer".

I would suggest think back on when shooting with your G11 and write down the features you like, features you dislike, and features you wished the G11 had for the the type of photography you most of the time.

From the above items make a list of the items you want/ like your new camera to have.

Just a FYI in you're in the USA (location not in profile) Canon USA Refurbished PowerShots currently has reduced price of $US279.99, includes Canon USA 1-Year Warranty. Reduced price valid till 11/21/15, or inventory sold out.

See HERE.

Canon periodically reduces the refurb prices, which makes a good deal that it includes the Canon USA 1-Year Warranty.

Good Luck on your quest!

Cheers,
Jon

Jon ... thanks again

You're welcome.

... i was just coming back to the forum - this question ... from the research and my understanding is the X'are the next step up and replacing the G series?...

At this time it appears that way -- looks looks as if the G5 X may be the update/ replacement for the G16, ditto for the G9 X for the S120. P&S are continuing to decline.

There's the Rumor suggests Canon might no longer produce small sensors post.

now i have another question ... do i need to create a new thread?

5x or 3x? - in the final run of research i came across a comparison of both and it seems 3 runs ahead of 5 as the focal length is longer, the optical zoom is huge (52x vs 4.2), the aperture range is wider, the focus range is higher plus a microphone jack. heavier though.

Also note no EVF, and additional cost for adapter to attach filters/ lens hood.

i loved my G11 and as for features i like and dislike (biggest dislike was the buttons kept getting in the way when holding the camera).... its more about a wish list?...

As I suggested in my previous post above I believe your next step is to make a "wish list" or "check list" of the items you want in your new camera based upon YOUR photography needs/ preferences. Then make columns next to the list for each cameras that you're interested in to see which camera comes the closest to YOUR list.

If DPR does not have a full review yet on the camera(s) you selected do a Google search for the camera to find reviews.

... getting confused now

To prevent further confusion after you done all the research on one or two cameras, do start a new thread for a camera, and try to your best ability to ask specific questions on the items you're not clear on and/or do not understand.  Less specific the questions will result in broader range of answers.

Good Luck & Cheers,
Jon
