Re: shadow pushing - how much is enough?

Exactly. I honestly don't understand all the fuss over dynamic range. Even with my old EOS-M , in LR I can drop the highlights -100, raise the shadows +100 & the image still looks fine on my 42 inch monitor. (With perhaps a tiny touch of NR in the shadows) How much more do you actually need? If you're exceeding the adjustment availability in LR, then more DR from your sensor is NOT going to save you

Interesting, I use Canon's DPP with my 650D and do feel that more DR from the sensor would be good on occasion. There are photos where I push the shadows to max (+5) and the result is too much noise where adequate noise correction would result in too much loss of detail. But if you're saying that Sony sensors' DR are already exceeding the adjustment availability of LR, then I would agree that the extra DR is not usable. But reading the various forum posts, it seems many would disagree.

This is a totally separate issue from whether high DR photos are aesthetically appealing to begin with which has been argued back and forth and there is no right answer IMO.
