If buying for sport or birds in flight just consider one simple comparison. You are likely to be cranking up the iso to achieve the desired shutter speed so will a 400mm f6.3 give you better image quality than the 300mm f4 using an iso of over 1 stop lower? Will it give better image quality then the 300mm f4 with 1.4x tc which will give greater reach whilst still being at a lower iso.

The 100-300mm pretty much demands that the aperture be locked at f7.1, so cranking up the ISO is a given. Shooting at f6.3 will be a bit of a boost. Adding in 800mm equivalent will be a BIG boost, on multiple levels… for me at least.

Accepting and balancing limitations is what it's all about.
