Sony R1 postview

Have moved on to M43 and Sigma DP3M so time to review how the R1 fared (2007-2015). Not saying I won't ever use it again.

fantastic ergonomics, great grip, deep and rubbery

direct control of everything. top-mounted display allows for buttons to be placed all over the body

versatile fl range: 24-120mme

display turns around 2 axes, easy to frame in any situation, expands the focal range at the wide end

lens mostly very sharp, best stopped down to f8-16

live zebra makes exposure a breeze, sadly missing from my new cameras

beautiful and logical design

AF stops working in even mildly dim conditions

display turns downward only about 10 degrees (for no apparent reason), not enough for overhead shots

AWB inconsistent and unreliable (not big deal: shoot raw and/or use fixed WB)

noisy compared to modern cameras, ISO 400 somewhat acceptable, 800 only for emergency use, hardly any DR left

evf and screen resolution pitiful by today's standards (230 000p?)

mine would not always release shutter at first press

my lens sometimes had a slight problem with the upper left region, which in cold and damp weather worsened to double images

great workhorse, very easy to use, great image quality when used within limits, wrote 1500 pages of books full of r1 images (buildings)
