Canon needs to add a "Parental lock" option!!!
2

Just finished helping my Mum (Mom) to download pics from the M that I gave her recently (my excuse for upgrading to the M3 :)).  She has recently returned from a month holidaying in Europe and needed help downloading the images to her PC.

Before I handed her the M I set it to shoot in JPEG, set it to intelligent auto and gave her some quick photography lessons and challenges to make sure she could take some shots with reasonable results.

Unfortunately part way through her trip my Mum thought that she should select "night mode" to better capture some shots of bridges (or something).  She wasn't able to work out how to do this (not that she needed to change anything) and regrettably handed the camera over to a self professed ipad toting photography "Expert" who claimed that she could help.  The ipad photography expert fiddled with random options on the camera before giving up.  She handed it back with a comment about it being much more complicated than what she is used to (an ipad presumably).
During her expert fiddling the ipad photographer apparently managed to set the resolution to S3 0.3M (720x408) and all of the subsequent shots were taken at this resolution.  This is kinda heartbreaking and I'm probably going to have to force my Mum to go back to Europe for another month to get some decent photos

It would be ideal if Canon were to add a Parental Lock feature to the M which would allow for menu options that you don't want to be fiddled with to be disabled.  This way you could turn on menu features as the camera owner becomes more proficient.  I can see no situation where I would want to allow for the shooting of tiny, useless S3 jpeg images and this is a "feature" that I would never enable for a "Parental" user :).
I personally think that Canon is on to something with the M10.  Several DSLR toting friends and family members have commented that they wished they had purchased something more like the M because they don't take their DSLR's with them nearly enough to justify owning them and feel that they would get much more use out of an M.  Some are even thinking of "upgrading" to an M because of this even though their current cameras are as good as the M/M10 in terms of IQ.

IMHO options are great but often confusing for beginners.  My Mum (70 ish) is one of those rare people who always read the manual and who could program a VCR back in the day without a problem.  Even with the dumbed down easy shooting modes there's still plenty of scope to get into trouble on a camera.  I think Canon would do well to offer a simplified experience not by adding simplified options but also by taking away the complex ones.
Mick.
