My issue is that it doesn't retain the codec and framerate information from PAL - NTSC - PAL or vice versa. If I set the GH4 for FHD 100M 50p in PAL, then change to NTSC, and then back to PAL, it reverts to 50M 50p, rather than the 100M I set originally. Unless I'm doing something wrong, this is probably either a bug, or something the GH4 firmware programmers have not accounted for.

I tried this on my GH4. In movie mode I set the recording quality to FHD 100M 50p IPB then saved the settings to C1. I switched to NTSC. C1 now shows FHD 100M 59.94p. Switched back to PAL. C1 shows FHD 100M 50p again. I tried this both in M and S modes but no difference. I have body version 2.3 firmware installed.

Thank you for the tests!  That is very peculiar, as your camera does what I wish mine did.  Very odd.  My GH4 is on firmware 2.3 as well.

My reason for wanting to use 60p was for slow motion, which has better quality in 50p or 60p conformed to 25 or 24, vs using the VFR 96 option.

I see - is that from your own tests? I shot 50p footage of a dancer with my GX7 last year and slowed it down to 25p. I didn't think it was great (though at normal speed the footage is very good) but will try it on the GH4 when I get time.

I shoot at 50p and conform to 25p for 50% slow motion all the time, and it looks fine.  The image quality of VFR is noticeably less than 100M 50p or 60p.  General consensus is that VFR is okay if you don't need the shot to be of the same quality as 50 or 60p.

The test with the GX7 might not be the best, because the data rate of the codec isn't as high as the GH4 or even the GH3.  The GH3 in 50p conformed to 25p looks great at 50M IPB.

Thanks again.  I'll continue with my tests of this quirky "feature".
