Hi. I have recently purchased a Canon 1200D with a AF 18-200mm F/3.5-6.3 Lense. so far I have only taken photos on Auto setting, but my photos are coming out blurry...say if there are a few people in the photos, some of them are clear and some are blurry...I guess it has something to do with the depth but how is this happening when on auto setting?

It's happening because of a couple of reasons:

- your camera has a large sensor which can produce a thin area (around the point of focusing, known as depth of field, dof) that's in sharp focus. In front and behind this area gradually gets less sharp. The viewfinder is designed for optimum clarity and can't be depended upon to judge focus

- the focal length has influence on the dof, the shorter the focal length, the larger the dof.

- aperture also has an effect on dof. The larger the aperture (the smaller the f/number) the smaller the dof.

- the closer you focus the smaller the dof

- auto mode gets you a good exposure but doesn't know what your intention is. Usually it sets aperture to f/5.6. At 200mm focal length and at close range the dof is very narrow. Use 24mm f/8 for example. To choose the aperture you want, use Av mode on the mode dial. You can set iso to auto, the shutter speed will be chosen based on available light.
