Yeah, the older Canons aren't that nice here. With newer models like 6D, 5diii or the Nikons no problem at all.

To be honest I'm not sure the newer models have improved that much - even at 800 ISO on the 5D3 I didn't have to pull the shadows too much before I'd start to see pattern noise and/or banding - it was a bit of a revelation to find how much more tolerant the Oly files were.

The iso capabilities of a 6d are excellent, DR at base ISO is not a strength, however. But one to two stops doesn't impose extreme difficulty with newer Canons, at least not with a scene as the one in the above example. The Nikons with their Toshiba/Sony sensors have no problem at all delivering the performance required.

Agreed that the Sony sensors are excellent in this respect, and I'm not saying Canons are a huge problem, but taken all together, I prefer the output of my EM-1 at 400 over my 5Diii at 1600 by quite a margin. As for the 7D (original) ... well that was truly disappointing at anything over 200 ISO.

I can assure you, selling off all my Canon gear to switch to m43 was no spur of the moment decision - I guess I spent a year comparing side by side (initially with an EM-5) before deciding. There are pros and cons on both sides, and I dare say could well be unique to the way I shoot and my choice of subjects.
