Need K-50 Advice (Keep or Return?)

I apologize if this isn't the right section, but I couldn't access the information forum.

I'm a novice photographer, but not a rank beginner. I used 35 mm SLRS long ago and for many years have gotten by with a Canon S90. But its limits frustrated me and I researched heavily into how to upgrade. I really like mirrorless cameras, but the ones I wanted I couldn't afford: Fuji X-E2, Panasonic DMC G7, Olympus OMD M-10 (1st version). I also liked the Pentax K-50 and bought the body from B&H, along with a used Sigma 75-300 mm manual focus K mount lens.

I thought it would be straightforward to use this lens, but trying to do so has only frustrated me to a degree previously unseen in humans. I still like the camera, but plan to return it for one of the mirrorless models; used if available.

Should I keep it and buy a nice 50 mm autofocus Pentax lens and learn to use the camera before branching out? B&H has the DA 50 mm 1.7 for a good price. Or go mirrorless? Am I experiencing the normal frustration anyone has with a new camera, or is the K-50 harder than most?

I mostly shoot nature, pets along with birds and some wildlife (if slow moving), people and street scenes. I'm not invested in a plethora of lenses or gear so I can go with any manufacturer.

I would be indescribably grateful for this community's advice and comments.

Canon PowerShot S90 Fujifilm X-E2 Leica SL (Typ 601) Panasonic Lumix DMC-G7 Pentax K-50
