Disable X100T OVF "auto-dimming" ?

Hello all.

I didn't get a reply in the Fuji X-Forum. Hopefully some kind soul here has a solution?

I'm a new X100T owner, but have owned most Fuji models at some point in the past, including the X100S and X-T1.

Due to the OVF "auto-dimming" in low light, I am finding the X100T's electronic rangefinder window nearly impossible to use to judge focus/exposure.

I would really like to disable this feature.

Thanks for taking the time to reply, Vic.

That will mean that I lose the ability to judge manual exposure in the EVF - and histograms in both the OVF/EVF.

I respectfully don't believe that this is the fix I'm looking for.

I absolutely do want to judge manual exposure in the "electronic rangefinder" pop-up in the OVF.

There's no solution to this that I'm aware of, a few hours after buying the X100T I came across the same and spent a while trying to find a solution to no avail.

That's a pity. I've started using the T like I did the S (i.e. forgetting all about the electronic rangerfinder pop-up). I still enjoy have the framelines move in real time, to correct for parallax, as I manually focus.

Try this: Setup Menu -> Power Management -> OVF Power Save Mode -> OFF

Thanks - I'm already configured that way.

I know why Fuji have done this. It's so that the framelines are not too bright and distracting in dim light conditions - mimicking the behaviour of Leica M cameras.

I'm fine with that - just don't want the "electronic rangefinder" pop-up to also be dimmed. The firmware seems to brighten/dim both in parallel.

Sure - it's by no means a show-stopper. Just an inconvenience that negates the benefit of the "electronic rangefinder" for my particular way of using the camera (OVF + full manual exposure).

With difficulty, in the past I emailed [email protected] and they said they'd forwarded the suggestion but you can't be sure it ever reached the right people. And maybe Twitter?

I just tested out my XP1 for this problem pointing into a dark corner and of course the frame lines etc dim so as not to intrude but I didn't find they dimmed too much for me use them. Did this feature (to dim the frame lines etc) not come as a FW update in response to complaints about the lines being excessively bright? Maybe I'm dreaming.

You have to be using the OVF exclusively for Power Save to do anything at all. If your view mode is LCD Only, Power Save won't do anything (it will be overridden), for example. Power Save causes the shutter to close completely, which you can confirm if you look at the front of the lens. So the electronic rangefinder is also incompatible with Power Save (since the shutter has to be open for the electronic rangefinder) so Power Save will be overridden. Power Save, when it hasn't been overridden, causes the live histogram to go blank and deletes live metering from the display. To meter a scene, you must half-press, which causes the shutter to open.

Agreed - it's only affects the X100T, as that is the only model with the EVF + OVF mode. It didn't bother me at all with the X100S or X-Pro1. It doesn't really bother me now - just renders that feature useless in dim light.

I think this is a problem as well and I keep hoping for a firmware update. I stopped using OVF because the pop up LCD is way too dim to be useful in lower light. Its a shame because in bright lights its great. Let's hope they push a firmware fix because this seems like an easy one.

Fortunately EVF works great else I would have returned camera if this was the only viewfinder option.

Try emailing [email protected] with the suggestion, the more people moan about it the better. They've always replied and said the comments were forwarded on to the development team in Japan which is reassuring.
