I agree with what you're saying and would definitely say they were relevant if they were conducted in the same manner - i.e., to see the background:foreground separation. The examples posted of the 35L II however have no context and therefore no meaning. I mean, who in their right mind would buy or consider buying a lens just from seeing those corner crops? They say nothing. If they were in the context of a photograph then that would be different, and if you could then say "oh yes, the Canon seems to make the image pop better than the Sigma" or vice versa then it would have meaning and something a potential buyer could use.
