Step-up ring and filters conflict with attaching a lens hood. Opinions sought.

I just got a Panny G7 with the 14-140 f3.5-5.6 and the 12-35 f2.8. Both of these lenses take 58mm filters.

I already have 62mm CPL, Variable ND, and UV filters from a previous camera, so I bought a 58 to 62mm step-up ring that allows me to use the 62mm filters on these lenses.  However, the lens hoods will not attach to the lenses while the filters are in place because the step-up ring and the 62mm filters are too wide in diameter for the hood to slip over it.

I tried putting the hood on first, before trying to attach the step-up ring and filters, but that didn't work either - the step-up ring will not screw into the lens threads.   So, I have a choice:  spend the money to buy 58mm filters so I can use the lens hoods, or use the 62mm setup and don't use the hoods.

My previous cameras were fixed lens cameras with no hoods, so I have no experience with lens hoods and don't know how important they are. I think they are intended to prevent lens flare in direct sunlight, right?

What are your opinions regarding using the step-up ring/62mm filter setup and not using the hoods vs. buying 58mm filters so I can use the hoods?  Thanks.
