It's a tough question, especially since you are really comparing apples with oranges. For me I would definitely go for the Olympus at $299 both for value (camera/$) and because it's a ILC - which means it's a camera that you can grow with and have fun with by trying new lenses. For other people, however, a compact is a better choice because they are never going to bother with lens changes anyway.

What type is your friend? You never know. My wife was category two - never thought about the lens, was actually afraid to change a lens - when I started her on a refurbished E-PL1 a couple of years ago. At first she stuck to the kit lens; then she was tempted occasionally by my 40-150. Now has a E-M10 and is always borrowing my 20/1.7.
