Re: Me or the equipment? Sporting C&C

Since with a sport like that you don't know always which direction they will run, that's why I like to have more depth of field. But for those that want a shallow depth of field, they have to have fast reflexes; they anticipate the moves and know where to focus in an instant.

There's times at games like that where you can do both where you have great depth of field or shallow depth of field with subject isolation. If I see a time where there are not any distracting elements, I might zoom up and take the chance that I get it right with a shallow depth of field. Other times, I would rather have that great depth of field. Sometimes I want everything in focus. That can be accomplished using a shorter focal length by getting close to the players and stopping down the lens. I've done that at soccer games and stand at the goal line with a wide/standard lens. The only problem with that is that I have to watch out or I can get hit with the ball. I also use a minimum of two cameras with attached lenses so I don't have to change lenses for the changing conditions; I just change the combinations. Sometimes you'll see sports photographers with at least two cameras with attached lenses. One is usually seen strung over their shoulders; the other is in their hands.
