A very pocketable camera with a 1" sensor, that will be more versatile than the S120 due to the much bigger sensor? I'm there. This was a very smart move by Canon, now 2x in a row (g3x/g9x) hitting in areas that really aren't covered so well. Many people complaining "where's the S120 successor? And oh no, look at the g7x blurry corners", here it is and if it does things right (eg, solid lens and performance), it should be a nice step up.
I agree, these rumored G9 X specifications seem very interesting for people looking for a "true" "S" line successor (mostly keeping the form size, seeing G7 X as not as pocketable).
Zoom range is a bit of a step down in comparison to S100/S110/S120, but as it`s a bigger sensor and more mega-pixels, it should provide useful crops at least similar to S90/S95 at telephoto end, and probably even better. Later, with technology advancement, I guess the reach will be addressed as well, which did happen for the "S" line in the past, too.
Depending on the price, this one might even take a bit of RX-100 market (but G7 X as well), for people that don`t mind sacrificing a bit of lens reach/speed for noticeably smaller camera (especially once inside the pocket), yet still a visible step up in comparison to the "S" series.
Leather grip surface seems as a nice idea, too, it`s making the camera even easier to hold for the general audience, though I guess some people will still prefer custom grips on top of that

My Canon S90 is starting to act up.
I've been hoping someone would bring along something similar with a bigger sensor.
Something for my vacation and friends / family get-togethers.
I'm going to take a long hard look at this Canon G9x.
Take care & Happy Shooting!
