Pics of just mountains are boring most of the time ( i am a mountaineer with 30 years experience).

the pictures get interesting because of the other elements in the picture. The mountains are just an interesting background.

Some examples with my preferred lens choice to show my point:

WIDE (oly 12 mm)

subject of interest in foreground ( flowers, stone,...), reflection of mountains in lake in middle ground and mountain ridge in background.

The 12 mm makes subjects in foreground larger and mountains in background very small. A simple mountain landscape is dissapointing most of the time.

Mid range to wide: voigtlander 17.5 (or oly)

All kind of environmental portraits, street and general travel shots. Allround focal length. A must have with low light bonus.

People shots: oly 45 mm

all kind of portraits, but the background compression of this focal moderate telefoto length makes it a great lens for mountain "portraits" if the distance to the subject is right. Also great for people shots on a trail or ridge, and compressed background with mountains in the distance.

conclusion: with your travel zoom, you have everything covered. I only would add a 17 or 25 mm fast prime (1.8 or faster) for environmental portraits and low light indoors or evening. Once you have one of those and you are used to your prime, it won't leave your camera.

Great explanation but maybe too detailed for Dheorl me thinks?

So you have a go at my behaviour and then act even worse? Very smooth.

I have nothing wrong with the guys explanation as to why he likes wide angles, just that he has already explained it plenty of times and claims that people with different opinions don't just have different tastes but are simply wrong. I can't help but feel he should just get over it and accept that no many times he says it in as many different ways he likes they will still be just as right as he is.
