Low key photography

I saw a video on low key photography on YouTube.. the one where we can take images with black background.

So, basically this is what I did:

1. Had a white colored plastic toy as model

2. Used my 50mm STM lens

3. Set my Canon 700D in Av mode

4. Got my ISO at 800

5. I kept taking images with varying f-stop values until the picture all went black. I was shooting in my room (with a tube-light on) and so the photo got completely dark when i hit F7.1

6. I then used the flash that came with my camera to take the picture with the same settings.

The background did not go black at all. Everything was visible. I even ensured the toy had some space between it and the background.

What am I doing wrong?
