I still think my old Nikon SB-26 flashes is one of the better ones as it does have a S1 slave mode so a single pulse triggers it OK, but it also has a delay available so it can fire just after the main flash so it won't have some weird effect on the main flash exposure if the main flash is set to auto.

I like the SB-26 as my most dependable and easy to use manual flashes. It is always the first one I grab, then an old SB-28, and then the Yongnuos. Funny that I would usually NOT grab my SB-900 unless I was doing iTTL. I just don't like the menus (finding SU-4 mode takes me five minutes every time!).
I miss the outstanding true TTL that the SB-26 had with my old Nikon film camera. It always seemed better than the complex iTTL/eTTL on DSLRs (for a single flash on camera).
Yes, the SB-26 is an oldie but extremely goodie. At one stage in film days I also had the SB-28 but sold that early and kept the SB-26 as it had better features, and it was way better build. Used with a Nikon N8008s (F801s) as a perfect host camera, also had the weird but nice F70 (N70) for a while. Yes, one bought in USA the other bought in Australia hence the muddled names.
When I was doing a lot of flat copy work I had a setup with two little SB-30 flashes on arms off a copy stand (a converted enlarger). Those also are very useful, they nicely took the place of an SU-4 unit that was lost when on a weekend away, and the SB-30 were used for a long while with my E-PL1 before more lately buying an equally small Olympus FL-300R flash, two in fact so I can duplicate the two small flashes up close work easily.
