Bought 7i thought it had Auto Zoom

OK, I've used manual zoom trying to catch some planes (aeromodelling)...

Well IT HAS NO COMPARISION with electronic zoom. You can frame pretty fast indeed.

All the other digicams I tried had this beautiful purple fringing around contrasty objects. My D7Hi doesn't have that lovely "aura". I guess I'll have to take it back. :)

ah ah..very funy :)

give it to me and I will exchange it for my lovely c700 with 10x powerful zoom and plenty of that nice aura!

One of the reasons I bought my Minolta 7Hi is the manual zoom.
A power zoom is about as useful as an electric fork, and let's not
forget size and weight (my favorite D7 attributes).
A cam like the 717 is always fully extended and front-heavy.
Even if they do develop an affordable dslr, I'll never go back to
lugging all that stuff.

Hi,
The other day were a big feast in town here in France for the
revolution date. It was just so great to zoom in and out so quick
to get some captures. Take a whole scene of a theatra piece and a
cool portrait of a nice actress just took a few seconds to change
Don't give your Minolta back, you will regret it. You must be
feeling like being in a Minolta forum

They get me so nervous... all those manual exposition and manual focus and those dials too easy to touch. I am thinking on returning my 7i, I am right now remembering and loving my old "use and dispose" camera which was so auto and good that even don't needed to focus... :)

BTW, I heard that Minolta will introduce this new hi-tech autozoom in its next model. It works thru a Wi-Fi wireless LAN connection to a PC or MAC, and it allow (and only allow) to manage the zoom thru a "ad-hoc" desktop application which let you adjust the zoom with your mouse clicking several sliders and a zoom graphic equalizer with sound (TM) .

The tech loving people like me will love that remote and very "auto" cyber zoom. :)))))

I also recently read that the new cyber autozoom will have several modes for its motorized advance, including:
  • Low velocy with ambient noise (TM)
  • Hi velocity overflow sure (TM)
  • Zig-zag sewer machine stylish (TM)
  • The innovative "Samba non-stop movent" (TM) *
  • This new mode will shake the zoom back and forth with its genuine "samba dance" pattern, adding a nice "random effect" to your photos. Technology at its pinnacle!.

You definitely don't know the real type of photography.

pfff.....cheap! Learn to use the disposable one first before you get to the pro camera then!

Did cost me some weeks of training and a lot of courage before I mastered that special way of camera handling which brings me the whole process fully atomatic, inclusive even the post processing and printing.
Kind of special waving with the camera, still in its bag.

Yeah: Must be done within sight of my son. That is the limiting factor. Have still to work on it.

I would have returned it if it didn't have manual zoom, be patient and take the time to learn the camera. You will realize how much better manual controls are once you get the hang of things. Manual zoom is much faster and accurate once you can control it properly.
Just bought the 7i after reading Reviews and forums and somehow
missed checking out the Zoom feature. I presumed it had an Auto
Zoom like the Fuji S602 and Sony DSC-717 I was comparing it to. I
feel dumb!

Tonight I noticed on the forums, that some prefer the manual zoom.
Why is it manual and is it something you like or just get used to
it? I am considering returning it, but like all the other features.

I put an electic motor on the lens of my 7i so I could power zoom. I am also using a lens adaptor that changes the focal length from 28mm equivalent to 35mm equivalent (28mm makes people look funny). I installed an adaptor so I can use an expensive and oddly shaped battery instead of common Ni-MH batts. I disabled all the buttons and switches on the case of the camera and rewrote the software so all functions could be accessed from menus. I removed the 49mm filter threads from the front of the lens. Now I can use special adaptors to mount filters and accessory lenses. The one thing I didn't change was the CF door position. The neck strap ring keeps the door from popping open and the card from falling out.

excellent..now can you write a firmare for the Sony 707/717 that disable the hot mirror in regular mode? you would become rich :)

that actualy I prefered...you can use a PL without getting the damn vigneting. I would prefer to use an adapter but due to the nature of the D7 lens..I understand it's not possible.

LOL :)

I would add that I removed the battery compartiment from mine so that it is located under the camera instead...prettier but of cousre it is a problem with tripod and changing batteries.
