Mixed feelings

I bought the EOS M3 because I have a significant investment in EF lenses, which I can use with the EF lens adapter. I know it's not the most highly regarded mirrorless camera but I wanted to stay in the EOS ecosystem.

I did my first serious shoot yesterday... around 350 shots of which close to 100 were keepers.

I was very pleasantly surprised with the quality of the images (I was using EOS M lenses, which sort of negates the reason for buying this camera in the first place) and they were tack sharp with great colour and contrast.

It was hard work getting them though... a lot more-so than using my 6D or 7D. Of course a lot of this is down to familiarity with the two other cameras but I found it hard shooting using the LCD display - especially in daylight.

I do have the electronic viewfinder which I used most of the time but had to remove it if I wanted fill flash (using an external flash - I didn't try the built in flash so don't know if that was a viable alternative).

Where it was easier than the 6D or 7D was lugging it around... there was a lot less weight on my shoulders.

My biggest disappointment though was battery life. I've never had a flat battery - though I use battery grips with two batteries on my DLSRs so I'm spoilt there. The EOS M series, of course, doesn't allow for a second battery so I had a red battery indicator towards the end of my 350 shots - despite charging the battery immediately before heading out.

Bottom line - I'll be using the M3 for shoot which involve a lot of walking but otherwise, I think my DSLRs will remain my staple cameras.
