Help Opening X3Fs? Something Changed!!

I have been using my Sigma SD1 Merrill without the dust shield to take Infrared photos using  720nm and 760nm filters. For a while everything was fine when I opened the X3F files and saved as TIFF. They looked like the JPEGs, but I use those for preview, and keep them low rez while I have the X3F-RAW at full rez to work on.

A few months ago, things went suddenly south. The X3F files would save, but they were way off -- far too light and actually losing detail... there was information exaggerated in several channels, rather than just the red or blue (Depending on exposure it has been either or...), and instead of Red/black, I get something lighter pinkish or purple. After processing, no matter what I do, the JPEGs look better even though they are lower rez. It isnt a process problem... I'm pretty good at tht... I've actually written 9 books on image editing.

I tried everything I could think of to correct the problem. I reinstalled the software, went back a version, deleted all the preferences, tried again...Most recently with 5.2.1, which is supposed to work with my operating system (Mc OSX 10.6.8). I tried using Picasa, and can't get it to recognize the X3F files. All I want is for the X3F files to open looking like the JPG conversions on board the camera! I'm guessing something happened when I was making a correction and closed the program...some setting saved? But I would think deleting the preferences would take care of that...

Any ideas?

Richard
