Go with the RX100 Mk IV.
Really? I could not replace my G15 with one of those. 70mm is not long enough. The EVF is fiddly. There are less manual controls. There is no hot shoe....
Yep I agree 100%. The G15's 28-140mm f/1.8-2.8 lens, hot shoe, viewfinder, and external controls are the reasons I selected the G15 over the other Enthusiast Zoom Compact Cameras at the time.
Have you looked at the Olympus Stylus 1s? 28-300mm constant f/2.8. B&H Photo has the Stylus 1s for $599.99.
Grant the Stylus 1s bigger than G16, but smaller than the G3X and has a large EVF that's received very good reviews.
As discussed in this topic, wonder if Canon, Olympus, and Panasonic will release any new enthusiasts pocketable compacts.
What's wrong with the G7X? Wow.
Did say not anything "wrong" with the G7 X. My reply was to arrow501's post which arrow501 noted wanting a camera with EVF and hot shoe -- G7 X has neither.
I preferred...
For "myself" for a enthusiasts pocketable would want one with built-in EVF and a hot shoe.
Fair enough, but I must say you have some large pockets!
Definitely was not referring to shirt pocket (that's why I have the S110), or if wearing tight jeans.
Can fit G15 in front pocket of standard jeans, and quite easily in light jacket pockets or photo vest. Also have a small case with a belt loop that's a snug fit for the G15 that wears easily without any incumbency to normal activities.
The g7x is not terribly small and is a bit heavy, imho. I feel the same way about Evfs and hotshoes but had to adjust to life without them.
For myself encountered far too many times in bright daylight conditions (especially if getting the shot requires the sun at your back) to be able to see the image on the LCD well enough to compose.
G15 not much bigger than the G7 X:
G7X: 4.06 x 2.36 x 1.57″
G15: 4.21 x 2.99 x 1.57"
Hence for myself, even though I'm a long time Canon compact film and digital camera user, at this time would be a choice between the LX100 or RX100 III -- unless there's an LX100 II with at least net 16 MP image sensor. IMHO the current LX100's 12.7MP image just does not compete well with the 20 MP 1" sensor images at lower ISOs.
Cheers,
Jon
All good points, Jon. I must say I thought long and hard about the RX100III before getting the G7X. Everyone raves about it and most reviewers prefer it. And it certainly has some advantages. Yet, my impression was that the tilt screen had more positions but seems a bit less rugged than the Canon. Yes, that EVF is also nice but it, too, seemed a bit delicate for pocket carry. I also thought the longer zoom reach was a suitable offset for the lack of an EVF. And it was $150 cheaper. All and all, it was not a clear cut decision but Canon gear has been good to me so I decided to stick with it.
The irony was that what I really wanted was an M3 but they were not selling in the US at that time so I got the G7X as an alternative. Now I'm waiting to see what the M4 looks like. Let's cross our fingers that it has an EVF and hotshoe!
