Not exactly the same, but similar to JPEG conversion with Y'CbCr method and 4:2:0 sub-sampling which can also give artifacts.

Hi Ted,

If I remember right JPEG compression works using a Cos transform to mimc how the eye works and quantizies high frequency color information hence compressing the scale.  So yes it is not a surprise that under certain conditions the Q sensor produces artifacts that could resemble those of JPEG compression.  It won't happen on all images, just like a Bayer won't produce color Moire on every image - only under very specific conditions.
