Canon G10 Sensor Issue?

My canon g10 has always worked "like a charm".   Sometimes now when I "half press" the shutter button to lock the focus,  the image on the back "darkens" considerably and the camera won't obtain focus (square stays yellow).  NOthing I do will make it work.  If I turn the camera off then on again,  it will work for a while, but ultimately starts doing the "no focus" thing again.  Can anyone tell me what the issue might be.  Is it me or the camera.  I haven't been doing anything differently and the issue occurs regardless of my photographic environment (IE bright light, darkness, inside, outside, etc)

thanks
