Yes, Canon says the 50mm f/1.8 STM optical formula is the same as its predecessor. But there are definitely some differences between the two lenses – including MM, MFD, lens coatings and the overall lens housing changes– that seem to indicate there may be design elements (other than the optical formula) that have contributed to the reduced vignetting. That's our theory, at least.
