Stability is a complicated thing and it's not necessarily about stiffness or rigidity per se.  Usually vibration damping is more important and usually composite materials provide better vibration damping than metals.  Ditto (for most frequencies) mass: the more massive, the less vibration (which is why hanging a gear bag from the tripod can do wonders).
