Re: Where silent shutter helped me

I got to thinking though about the banding that can happen using the electronic shutter with artificial lighting. Wouldn't artificial lighting be common shooting theater, classical concerts, churches, corporate meetings, etc.? So, would one in those situations have to switch to the non-silent mechanical shutter?

If you use a shutter speed that matches a multiple of the flicker rate, you can avoid banding even with a slow electronic shutter. So, in a 50 Hz country use 1/100, 1/50, or 1/25 and in a 60 Hz country use 1/125, 1/60, or 1/30. (I know 1/125 does not quite match the flicker rate of 120 Hz in 60 Hz countries, but it is close enough.) Shutter-priority mode or manual mode with auto ISO can be useful for this.

If you want to avoid banding with a faster shutter speed than 1/100 or 1/125, you do have to fall back on the mechanical shutter (although this won't help much if you have a slow mechanical shutter like the GM1 or GM5).

Regards,

Alan
