When is using back button focusing a bad idea?

Last night I read about using the * button to focus with instead of the two step focus/release via shutter button.  Well being able to separate the two appealed to me, I can see advantages when composing the shot.

Now when is back button focusing a bad idea?  I'm thinking air shows but I suspect there are other scenarios where the back button might not be the best choice.

So if you would, teach me about focusing, modes and methods.  I have a T5i if it matters.

Thanks,

Szumi
