My impression was that the G7X was pretty much the s95 (or s120, or whichever it came out with) with a one-inch sensor, and the larger sensor requires a larger body to work properly. Am I missing something?
I don't think you are missing anything ;-). I did exactly that - upgrade from S95. IQ with the G7x is better at all the focal lengths and all apertures and all lighting situations that the S95 can do - period. But the really huge advantage IMO of the G7x over the S95 is the ability to much better control DOF. Mind you, this does force you to build your photographic skills if you are only used to everything being in focus. But this is fun and certainly builds ones creative skills as well IMHO.
Example of DOF control - not possible with a small sensor camera if it has limited FL (as the S95 does).
