18-135 mm IS, no manual focus, missed a shot.

A kingfisher hovered above me, I was seated a few feet away. My camera was focused for that distance from the last shot. I tried to click off a few frames and got no reaction from the camera because it wanted to "focus" the shot and all it could see was blue sky because the bird was nearly dead center but not touched by any of the sensors.

It was too late by the time I could reach around and push the lens button to "MF" (manual focus). A kingfisher is extremely nervous and difficult to photograph. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I've lost other shots to the 18-135 but this one struck a nerve.

Any ideas on how to avoid this situation? Overrides? Other lenses? Other camera models or brands?

See equipment list at bottom: was using T4i with 18-135mm IS
