Do either of these smartphones as sold by Verizon, (which we own) have installed an application for NFC or "near field communication"? Or can such an application be purchased through google play store or another 3rd party?
Both have NFC and unlike on an iPhone, any app can access the NFC connection. There are third party apps that will even let you program custom tags for your use.

The S5 has an IR port as well as the ability to connect with NFC. You can use the IR port to control any IR device. I use mine on our TV, camera, stereo, and fans. Personally I like the S5 for its removable battery, and microSD card support, but not everyone sees the need. and the S6 is more what they want in a phone.
Thank you
Russell
