Of course, the OP began with the premise, "Suppose you were in the market for a lens that covered the 35mm focal length."

My 24-70 II is covering that FOV. I've owned multiple 35mm primes and they mostly sat unused while I gravitated toward my wider lenses. I still own a Zeiss 35/2 ZF and I would have used it more if it could beat my 24-70G enough to justify carrying it and leaving 45 other FLs at home. I've sold my Nikon cameras so that may be a moot point going forward.

Sure.

I am sure our debate on the other forum leaves no doubt that I would pick the 35L II out of the bunch listed if I were picking a prime.

Then not, "None of the above", but rather Option 1 in the poll.

I think the significant thing for me about the 35L II is that Canon is moving in the right direction (if image samples match MTFs). Therefore, I look forward to the 24L III.

Myself, I'm hoping for a 100 / 2 IS and 200 / 2.8L IS to come next, but I think we all know those aren't what's coming next. That said, a 24 / 2L with good coma wide open would be a great lens for astrophotography among other things. I also wonder if Sigma has any plans for a 20 / 1.8A in the future.

Once you've done fifty, everything else is iffy.
