Suppose you were in the market for a lens that covered the 35mm focal length. Which would you choose:

  • Canon 35 / 1.4L II ($1799, 3.2 x 4.2 inches, 760g)
  • Sigma 35 / 1.4A ($799, 3.1 x 4.8 inches, 811g)
  • Canon 35 / 2 IS ($599, 3.1 x 2.5 inches, 335g)
  • Another 35mm prime (please specify)
  • A zoom that covered the 35mm focal length (please specify)

Thanks for participating!

GB, you left out original 35 1.4.

That would have been Option 4 -- "Another 35mm prime (please specify)".

this is what it boils down to for me.

If you are fine with f2 then the clear cut choice is the f2 IS. it has very good image quality, and had IS and is small and light

I don't disagree.

If you need the 1.4, you are balancing 3 factors: Cost, accurate and reliable AF and sublime sharpness. None of the 3 remaining options score well on 3. so you pick your priorities. I took cost and AF, hence the original 35L. I dont use the lens enough to justify upgrding to the II version, which I am sure will be optically superb, and very fast and accurate AF. I use my 35L for environmental portraits. for that purpose, I find the image quality adequate, even at f 1.4

Then please vote for Option 4 in the poll!
