I've read that the reason the 18-35 f1.8 doesn't AF well is because Sigma didn't pay to license the Canon AF algorithms.  Instead, they reverse engineered them.  Is this true?  Does everyone reverse engineer the AF, or do they pay the licensing?  How much could the licensing possibly be?

Seems like it would be a no brainer when you release the world's first F1.8 zoom...to make it as perfect as possible.  So if Canon does actually license the AF...why not do it so you have a lens done right?
