Why FF is cheap
6

Here is a fun little exercise.

Which system gives most IQ for the money?

Here is a comparison of how many DxO quality points for lenses you get for your money with two reasonably simliar systems, one FF, one m43.

I picked a Nikon D610, with 28 1.8 (because the new 24 1.8 hasn't been tested yet), 35 1.8G and 85 1.8G and compared with Olympus OM-D5 II and Oly 12 2.0, 17 1.8 and 45 1.8.

Overall cost for the FF system is 3.250 dollars, overall cost for the m43 system is 2.400 dollars.

The total number of DxO point for the lenses is for the m43 system is 67 points. The total number for the FF system is 102 DxO points.

So for the lens IQ you pay 35.80 dollars per point with the m43 system and 33.33 with the FF system.

If you discard the costs of the bodies, the m43 lenses costs 19.40 dollars per IQ point, and the FF system 17 dollars per IQ point.

Then we of course have the sensor scores which are 94 for the Nikon and 73 for the Olympus.

So on one hand we have a 3.250 dollars system with 94 sensor points and 102 lens points, and the option of two stops more DOF control

vs

a 2400 dollars systems with 73 sensor points and 67 lens points.
