There is also the canon ef-s 55-250mm is ii that has very good reviews
Its also not an expensive lens
The II is not bad, but definitely not as good as the STM, both optically, mechanically and built quality.
STM AF motor is way quicker and quieter than what the II has. STM motor is also the smoothest auto focusing for video, even better than USM. Using the II to shoot videos will not just produce jerking focus, but also add clicking sounds from the motor.
The STM lens does not rotate the front glass when focusing, while the II does. That's a circular polarizer filter killer.
But, it's $100 cheaper.
I ve read a couple of reviews saying that the image quality and the sharpness is also very good not only in the center but also in the corners as well (stm lens)
To me the 55-250 STM is L lens quality sans weather sealing. Load the aberration correction profile into the camera using Canon's EOS utility program, and it will get rid of any trace of CA or vignette. It's NOT serious at all without the in-camera aberration correction.
