I'm about to upgrade to a D800 and am now re-assessing my lens, particularly what normal lens to use.

On my current cropped sensor I use the 35mm f/1.8 DX, which would roughly equate to the field of view of a 50mm.

Should I get the much cheaper 50mm f/1.4 or the 35mm f/1.4? A lot of reviews I've read have called the 35mm the "New Normal" and there have been times on my 35mm DX, I wished I had a wider field of view and I was unable to step back.

Since you're going to Full-frame, I would get this:

- Nikon 50mm/1.8 "D" version ($100) -- teeny tiny, sharp in the middle!;
- Sigma 35mm/1.4 "ART" version ($800) -- VERY SUPERIOR quality, very large.

You're going to love them both!

The 50/1.8D can practically be used as a lens cap its so small!  It almost disappears on your camera, whereas all other lenses are HUGE.
