"New normal" is nonsense, it is all about personal preference. "normal", in that there is no tele-compression or wide-angle stretching going on, is about 40mm on a full frame sensor. 50 is "tele-normal" and 35 is "wide-normal", meaning that there is a nuance of compression (50) or stretching (35). Both are absolutely classical focal lenghts it depends on what you feel is right for you. I always found the 50 to be a little too tight for general photography, 35mm however is exactely how I see a scene. 28mm is already too wide for me for normal use and not wide enough for wide-use.
