I just got that lens and noticed the same thing while trying to photograph the full moon last night with my EM-1. Switching to manual was the only way to focus consitently. I noticed that the light (full moon in this case) was "blooming" in the EVF, meaning the lens created a soft halo effect around the brightness. My thought was that it was because of this soft, edgeless halo that it couldn't focus. Eventually I got a really good image but it was definitely more work than with my Nikon gear.

I had a chance to shoot the moon tonight at 210mm with the 40-150 + TC and although I was initially seeing "blooming" in the EVF once I got the exposure correct I was able to lose the effect and get sharp focus + a sharp image without bloom in the EVF using  SAF.

The attached is a 100% crop
