I think you have a good start.

You do a good job of leading the eye down different paths in the photo.

I would also try using the rule of thirds, adjusting the alignment slightly.

And use some different perspectives than you usually see - squat down, hold camera over head, or tilt it.

A good way to get use to this is to alter the perspective/dimensions in a photo editor to alter the perspective. (in Silkypics if you got that with your camera - the icons along the bottom).

Also try raising the contrast and saturation - the easiest way is in the camera, which will affect the jpegs. If you shoot raw, it won't affect the raw image, so you would have to do that in Silkypics.

Shoot a raw image and edit the rw2 file with Silkypics or RawTherapee and just start adjusting each of the options until you find something you like, then try to emulate that while you are shooting or with the camera settings. (Silkypics is the easiest, RawTherapee is very complex)
