I installed Fujifilm Camera Application (for Android) and it was crap, as I expected based on previous experience with Fujifilm software.

What I want is an App on my tablet to connect via camera WiFi and browse photos on the SD card. Nothing fancy, I just want a slide-show with scrolling, and an option for 100% view. (Fujifilm Camera App does neither, it can enlarge one thumbnail at a time, only.)

Our tablet is high-resolution with glorious colors - much better than viewing photos on a 3" LCD.

Is this impossible because it would require access to Fujifilm's and other vendors' proprietary WiFi?

Not impossible and by definition WiFi is not proprietary.  What makes it unlikely is that Fuji probably had not published the API to communicate with the camera once a WiFi connection is established.   Doesn't mean someone won't reverse engineer it,  but don't hold your breath.   Not a big enough user community compared to Nikon and Canon,  but it only takes one dedicated hacker...
