85mm lens autofocus system
Jul 23, 2015

The Samsung 85mm F1.4.
While it truly is an amazing lens in terms of sharpness and quality of bokeh, i am not completely satisfied with this lens. This is because the autofocus system is giving me too much pauze.
The problem is; I do miss shots while the focus system is trying to do it’s thing. This both in good and moderate light conditions. To often i miss “the moment” while the system hunts. Or it gives up locking on. Or it confirms focus while it’s clearly not in focus. This happens not all the time but still to often.
With this lens i only use single point autofocus. That works best. Continues autofocus makes the lens rack back-and-forth a lot. So i don’t use that also.
I do of course have all the latest firmware installed.
Also; Sometimes the lens gives a squeaking sound for a second when i initiate autofocus. I think it’s the mechanical coupling. I’m not to worried about that and it doesn't happen often.
Despite all of this, the amazing pictures i get make this lens worth while. It’s that good. But i do wonder. Am i alone in these troubles with it?
Because if i am i should try to exchange it or send it in for warranty.
I have to say; since i exchanged my complete Olympus E-M1 system for my current Samsung system my keeper rate is not what it used to be. This has a lot to do with the lesser autofocus system (with the 85mm and surprisingly also my 50-150mm S). I do miss the in-body stabilisation sometimes also. Despite these things, i wouldn't go back because of the amazing quality the system is capable of and the body that is truly a joy to use.
Anyhow… about that 85mm autofocus - any experiences?
Below - a picture from todays shoot (with the 85) to show of the 85, although i don't know if the site keeps the quality intact.
