Ok, I decided to jump into this system since Canon has not shown interested in a reasonable size APS-C with matched high quality lenses.

I just got an X-T1 with the 16-55 f2.8. Has anyone with this setup or similar tried several of the grip options?

Does the XL grip make a noticeable difference to the standard grip?

Yes, very big difference for the better. I got this grip for the 55-200 originally and it stays on the camera.

How does the battery grip compare? Do the arca-swiss rails work with clamps, or do you need screw quick releases? I have very large hands (can just barely palm a basketball), and that ruled out the X-T10 for me.

My Primary use is landscape, general event, and as a compliment to a DSLR + 100-400 when hiking. (I will still be using Canon for that).

Any other key accessories to get?

I have the same set up with the large Fuji hand grip the $160 one. It has built in rails call it for arca swiss. Its the grooves along the bottom.

Their is a cut out for the battery so you do not have to remove the grip. The larger grip is nicer because you get some more depth to the hand grip.

You should also check out Really Right Stuff they have excellent grips too.

***Battery grip.

The battery grip is ok, got it and returned it. It is not very ergonomic in the horizontal way you hold the camera the vertical feel is better, but I was not impressed.
