Hi David,

Of course it's a big difference in recovering details from 8-bit vs. 12 or 14-bit (and not compressed!) recording. I am just a very "comfortable" shooter, so I am avoiding shooting RAW as much as possible. One reason is that even with my obsolete K-x, around 90% of the pictures do not require any post-processing, so why to bother with RAWs . However, I set my camera such a way, that it shoots JPGs in the extended dynamic mode (on both ends) with the extended ISO setting (now back down to 200). And this helps a lot. Roughly only 1 out of 10 pictures require some minor tweaking.

Regards,

Peter

And then that is the way you should shoot. You're taking photographs for yourself and not for anyone else.  Whatever works for you is the right way for you.  I like to have the extra availability of RAW (and the PENTAX does produce some nice RAW files).  Through the use of my own presets and/or some quick standard adjustments, it takes me only seconds or less then a minute for the images I want to adjust unless there is something unusual.

What works for you is the right thing for you.  I'm not a perfectionist myself but I do like to have options.
